Quebec City

If you are looking for a unique European experience in North America, Quebec City, Canada is the area you are searching for for your family vacation destination. Reminiscent of France with it’s French language and culture, you can experience both a modern city and an ancient old city that is still surrounded by it’s original fortified walls.  The architecture is definitely European and you will get some fantastic photos.

Kids will love the spectacle of the changing of the guards at the Citadel, the military fort that has guarded Quebec for centuries.  What kid wouldn’t be thrilled to see a full dress parade of soldiers in their colorful red uniforms.  The entire show lasts about an hour and will keep the kids fully engaged.  Along with the changing of the guard, tours of the fort are also available.  With acres of land to run in, this is a great place to bring active children.

You also have an awesome view from the highest natural point in Quebec. The views from the top of the Citadel are just fantastic. You will get some great views of the Chateau, St. Lawrence and beyond along with some wonderful photo opportunities.

Quebec’s public transportation system is very user friendly and you can purchase one day passes ($6.15 CDN) for unlimited bus passages for the day or for two people on Saturdays and Sundays for the same price. If your children are old enough,  renting bikes is a great option for getting around.  Quebec City has miles and miles of fantastic biking trails.  Be aware however, if you are cycling in the inner city, many of the streets are steep and narrow.  In this case, public transportation will be a better option for your family.

Whether you prefer winter or summer family vacations, there is always a unique festival or two in progress.  There are new festivals every month and you are sure to find something that suits your family’s needs and interests.
